English
Overview
At New Forest School we believe that Literacy is a fundamental life skill. We use a variety of teaching and learning styles in our literacy lessons in order to meet the needs of all our students. Our principal aim is to develop children’s knowledge, skills, and understanding.
Our students have a range of abilities, which require suitable learning opportunities to enable them to succeed and progress. Speaking and listening activities are embedded throughout the curriculum.
ICT in literacy lessons is an integral part of the learning experience and specialist resources are available for students who often struggle with the written word.
Curriculum
In Key Stage 2 English is delivered through focused reading and writing activities within a cross curricular topic. These follow the revised KS2 Curriculum.
Within KS3 English is delivered by dedicated English teachers following the revised National Curriculum.
At KS4 students are able to follow the Entry Level Certificate in English (AQA) and/or GCSE English (AQA) depending on their level of ability.
Students use the Accelerated Reader system to develop vocabulary growth, literacy skills and reading skills. All students are regularly tested for spelling using the Vernon and reading is tested using PM Benchmark and Accelerated Reader system.
