ENGLISH CURRICULUM
Curriculum Intent
At OEA Education we believe that Literacy is a fundamental life skill. We use a variety of teaching and learning styles in our literacy lessons in order to meet the needs of all our students. Our principal aim is to develop children’s knowledge, skills, and understanding.
Our students have a range of abilities, which require suitable learning opportunities to enable them to succeed and progress. Speaking and listening activities are embedded throughout the curriculum.
ICT in literacy lessons is an integral part of the learning experience and specialist resources are available for students who often struggle with the written word.
Curriculum Time
Key Stage 3: English is delivered by subject specialists and given a high priority with the majority of students receiving 4 dedicated English lesson per week alongside any phonics/reading support required.

Qualifications
Depending on ability, students have the opportunity to undertake the following, nationally recognised, qualifications:
Entry Level Certificate in English: Level 1- Level 3
Functional Skills English: Level 1
AQA Unit Awards: English
Resources
English lessons benefit from access to laptops, an interactive digital projector and iPads. The English classroom also incorporates a small library whilst our communal space and 1:1 room are used for reading and phonics interventions.
Next Steps & Career Opportunities
English at Key Stage 3 leads to studying either GCSE English or Functional Skills English Level 2.
